But don't make your mom do it for you. Usually the cheapest flights are in the middle of the week (wednesday evening is supposedly the best) but there's really no actual science to finding a good price. If you are a student definitely try studentuniverse.com which offers discounted rates. If not, try using Orbitz, Travelocity, etc., then look up the flights they give you on the website of the airline itself, this can sometimes save you money.
